Obsessions (unwanted, repetitive, and distressing thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts that are done to try to relieve the anxiety caused by the distressing thoughts) create a very powerful, destructive cycle of anxiety. With OCD, anxiety takes on an extreme nature that differs from the kind of anxiety experienced in everyday life.
